Highways Agency warns over icy conditions

The Highways Agency has warned motorists about the dangers of icy conditions, with temperatures falling across the UK.

Snow has been forecast for much of the country, however, even if it does not materialise then drivers need to be wary of black ice and other dangers.

Jason Glasson, from the Highways Agency's winter team, said: "Although the forecast suggests you are unlikely to need a snow shovel this week, you should make sure you have plenty of warm clothing for you and your passengers. If you break down on the motorway it’s dangerous to stay in your vehicle."

The Met Office has put the UK on a cold weather alert, with London seeing temperatures of around minus three degrees C, and other areas plunging as low as minus six or seven degrees C.

Motorists should prepare for the cold spell by ensuring that they have an ice scraper and de-icer in their car, while blankets and food and drink should also be packed in case of an emergency.
