Students 'should learn to value home insurance'

Students should not attempt to save money by cutting back on their home insurance, an expert has claimed.
Gareth Kloet, head of household at Confused.com, pointed out that some students may find they have partial cover for their university accommodation through their parents' home insurance policy, but recommended they find out what the restrictions on this are.
Noting that many policies may not cover thefts from unsecure locations such as halls of residence, he advised students to look into taking out their own policy as it could offer specialist provisions such as cover for walk-in theft.
Furthermore, the expert reminded people to check that their home insurance is of a high enough level to cover expensive items such as laptops and mp3 players, as this may not come as standard with all policies.
"Whilst students may well be looking for ways to economise, home insurance is not something that can be gambled on and it's important not to make the assumption that they have cover elsewhere," Mr Kloet concluded.
Last month, research from Endsleigh found that the average student will take just under £4,000 worth of possessions with them to university.
